What is Dalgona Coffee?
This popular coffee drink is in some ways similar to a cold latte.
It has a smooth sweet taste with a layer of foam or whipped topping on the top.
There is a candy in South Korea called Dalgona candy.
It’s an airy toffee candy that in some ways resembles the creamy foam top used in this coffee recipe. That’s where the name came from. And it’s the inspiration for this Korean coffee recipe.
Whipped Coffee Recipe
Equipment Needed
While you can make this Dalgona coffee recipe with either a whisk or a hand mixer, it is much easier to use a mixer with a whisk attachment.
If you don’t have one, be prepared to spend some time whisking the topping to make this Korean coffee fluffy.

- 2 Tbsp Instant coffee
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Hot water
- Coffee Creamer Hazelnut, or flavor of choice
- Milk Use your milk of choosing, whole milk, skim, 1% etc…
- Ice cubes
Instructions
You can make this easy Dalgona Coffee recipe in just a few simple steps.
- Whisk instant coffee granules, sugar, and hot water until peaks are formed.
- Pour the flavored creamer over a glass full of ice cubes.
- Add milk.
- Finish the drink with a flyer of fluffy whipped topping.
Why is my Dalgona coffee bitter?
Traditional coffee tends to be bitter when it isn’t sweetened.
If you find this whipped coffee recipe is too bitter, you can add more sugar when you make the whipped topping.
Why did my Dalgona coffee fail?
If you didn’t get that light, fluffy topping that whipped coffees are known for, you may have added too much water.
Check the measurements carefully.
What’s the best milk for whipped coffee?
You can use either whole, skim, or reduced-fat milk in this Dalgona Coffee recipe. Either one will work fine and taste delicious.
You can also use vegan milk like almond milk or soy milk to keep a vegan version of this Korean coffee.
Just look for a vegan creamer for the base to go with it.
Can I use a different flavor creamer for my whipped coffee?
I used Hazelnut creamer when I made this.
But, if you want to have a different flavor, you can try French Vanilla, Caramel, or even Peppermint.
To give this drink a mocha flavor, add a 1/2 teaspoon of cocoa powder to the instant granules while you make it. Yum!
Is Dalgona Coffee hot or cold?
You can make your whipped coffee recipe either hot or cold.
This recipe is made using ice cubes, so the final drink is more similar to a cold latte than a hot cup of coffee.
Should we mix whipped coffee before drinking?
There are no rules about how you have to drink this.
But, unless you want to drink the topping first followed by a cold cup of milk and coffee creamer, I recommend stirring it gently to combine the flavors.
Can you make Dalgona coffee with ground coffee?
No, you cannot substitute ground coffee for instant coffee.
The instant granules are what help to make the foamy topping because of the way they are dried.
This type of coffee drink tends to be fairly high in caffeine. So, if you are concerned about that, you can substitute decaf instead.
Or, try half decaf and half caffeinated for a little bit less buzz.
If you want a flavored whipped topping, you can use flavored instant coffee granules when you prepare it.
Just vary the flavor combinations until you find one that you like the best.
What can I add to my coffee?
If you want to go all out and create a real coffee house drink without leaving your home, you have lots of options.
Here are just a few suggestions of things you can top your beverage with.
- Cocoa
- Coffee powder
- Crumbled cookies
- Honey
