Homemade Brownies Recipe

Brownies are one of my favorite homemade desserts. And, these are fudgy, moist, and loaded with chocolate flavor.

If you’ve never made them from scratch before, put down the boxed mix and try this easy recipe. You won’t believe how quickly they will become your favorite dessert.

Homemade Brownies Recipe from Scratch

It honestly doesn’t take any more time to make them from scratch than it does to use a boxed mix from the store.

How do you make homemade brownies from scratch?

It really is simple to make this recipe. It’s just a matter of mixing the ingredients together and baking them in a greased baking pan for 24 to 28 minutes.

The batter will be thick. So, you will need to spread it in the pan carefully.

Can I make these gluten-free?

If you want to make gluten-free brownies, you can use a one to one flour substitute. By using this type of flour, you won’t need to make any other changes to your recipe.

What makes brownies more fudgy?

Fudgy or cakey? That’s the big question when it comes to making a homemade brownies recipe.

If you like fudgy, you will need to add a bit more butter and chocolate. If you prefer cakey, it has a bit more flour and also has baking powder to make it rise more.

Can I use oil instead of butter?

I love the taste of butter in this recipe. But, if you are all out, you can use 3/4 of a cup of vegetable oil for every one cup of butter called for.

If you don’t have vegetable oil, you can also use canola oil. Olive oil can be used in a pinch but you might notice a change in the flavor.

Butter spread in a pan to cook brownies

I use butter and lots of it! It not only helps prevent them from sticking but gives it a nice added buttery flavor as well.

These brownies are as easy as adding all the ingredients and then mixing with a spoon! The final step is to add chocolate chips or other candies and fold them in.

Allow the brownies to cool completely before slicing. Cut them with a plastic knife, or use the edge of a spatula and cut straight down-hopping across the brownie pan; not dragging.

What can I add to brownies?

You can add almost anything you want to when you make this recipe. One of my favorites is to add chocolate chips so I can make chocolate chip brownies. But, here are a few more ideas you might want to consider.

Tips for making perfect homemade brownies

When making baked goods with chocolate, the key is to get the best quality chocolate you can afford. It makes all the difference in how they melt and the final taste.

Always check them 5 minutes before you think they will be done. You can always put them in for more time. But, if you cook them for too long, they won’t be very good at all.

Let the homemade brownies cool completely before you cut them. This will prevent them from crumbling and give them a more fudgy consistency.

Can I add frosting?

Yes, you can easily top these delicious treats with your favorite frosting. Here are just a few ideas you can get creative with.

  • Chocolate frosting with cherry pie filling
  • Cheesecake topping
  • Drizzle caramel syrup over the top
  • Cream cheese frosting with chopped nuts
  • Vanilla frosting with chopped candy canes on top

How should I store these?

After they are completely cooled, cut them into squares. Then, layer them in layers, separated by wax or parchment paper, in a container with a tightly fitting lid.

Store them at room temperature for 3 to 5 days. Or, you can freeze these in individual Ziploc bags for up to 6 months.

When you want to enjoy one of these homemade brownies, just take it out of the freezer and leave it on the counter. Let it return to room temperature which should only take a few minutes.
