Hey grilling newbies! Wondering how to grill hamburgers? Good news, I’m going to show you exactly how to make hamburgers on the grill! Grilling hamburgers is real easy to do, so don’t be intimidated.

Grab your ground beef and form burger patties that are about 3/4″ thick, and just larger than the buns you’ll be using. Use your thumb and forefinger to create a dimple in the middle of the patty, this helps for even cooking. Sprinkle each side with salt and pepper, or use this applewood rub – it’s is fantastic!

Fire up your grill to high heat 450-500 degrees F. This is the same for gas or charcoal.

Oil the grates with vegetable oil. Use tongs and a paper towel or spear half an onion with a fork and dip it in oil to oil the grates.

Place patties on the hot grill and cook for 4 minutes on each side. This will yield medium burgers if your patties are the average thickness, 3/4″. Grill for less time for a more rare hamburgers, or more time for a more well done burger.

Top with cheese and close the lid for the 30 seconds to a minute if so desired.

  • Ground beef 1 pound usually makes 3 to 4 burgers
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Buns cheese and toppings optional


  • Preheat grill to high - 450 to 500 degrees F. (usually about 10 to 15 minutes)
  • Form patties about 3/4" thick and just larger than your buns are round
  • Sprinkle each side of the patties with salt and pepper
  • Oil hot grill grates and place patties on grill
  • Grill for 4 minutes on each side for medium doneness. Grill less time for more rare burgers and more time for more well done burgers.
  • Top with cheese and close lid during the last 30 seconds to 1 minutes of grilling if desired.
  • Add burgers to your buns and top as desired
