So you got yourself a cornhole board set, or you made one by following my How To Build Cornhole Boards post. Either way, you need to know how to play the game of cornhole now. It’s fairly easy to keep score, with a little math. Have a pad of paper and a pen handy. How do you keep score in cornhole? Let’s find out!
How To Play Cornhole
Let’s learn how to play cornhole. Whether you’re playing with just two people, or playing teams – let’s get to it!
How Far Apart Are Cornhole Boards?
To set up your cornhole boards, you’ll want to place them 27 feet apart, measured front edge to front edge. Of course, you can place them at any distance. The 27 feet is just the ‘official distance’ for cornhole boards.
One on One or Team Cornhole
Cornhole can be played with two or four people. If you have four people, pair up and compete against one another! Each team will stand at one end, facing their opponents at the other. In singles play, or one on one, you both stand at the same board.
Take turns and alternate tosses until all players have thrown all four cornhole bags. The team who scores the point last will throw first at the beginning of the next inning.
Cornhole Scoring
Players receive one point for a bag that lands and stays on the board, and three points for a bag that goes into the hole – regardless of who knocks it in. Yes, even if the opponent knocks it in, you still get three points!
Add up the score at the end of each round (inning) after all players have thrown all four bags. Now comes the math. The scores offset one another.
Scoring Example
If after all bags are tossed, the team with more points wins that inning and is awarded the difference. Team A has 1 bag on the board and Team B has one in the hole and no bags on the board; the score would be Team A: 0 and Team B: 2. That score is because Team B has one in the hole (3 points) and Team A has 1 bag on the board (1 point)). 3 minus 1 = 2 point difference. Team B wins that inning and gets 2 points.
Cornhole Champion – Winner
Cornhole is played until one team has reached 21 points at the end of an inning. Once a team has reached 21, the game is over. That is unless the other team can tie up the game. If that is the case, have toss off. Toss bean bags inning for inning until one team wins an inning.

Must be an East Coast or Mid West activity. I made one and have put out and tried to get people interested at my backyard parties. Nope, no go here on the west coast. I ended up giving to one of my neighbors with 4 kids. I enjoy playing at backyard bbq’s or get togethers, guess others do not. At least I tried!
Really!? That’s too bad. It’s a fun game for sure. I’m on the east coast, so maybe that’s it. Though I thought it was getting quite popular everywhere – there was a tournament airing on ESPN a couple of weeks ago. Hmmm bummer no one wanted to play!
