Philly Cheese Steak Pizza Recipe with Homemade Crust

It’s no doubt that one of my favorite sandwiches is the Philly cheesesteak.

To be honest, I’ve never had an “authentic” one from Philadelphia, but I’ve made some darn good sandwiches in my day. Then again, most of us haven’t been to Philadelphia, so it’s likely you haven’t had an authentic one either… Have you?

Today we’re switching things up a bit with a homemade Philly cheesesteak pizza recipe. You probably know about Domino’s philly cheese steak pizza and Papa John’s philly cheese steak pizza. Now, you can also make a copycat in your own home.

We’ll be making the crust from scratch, the way it should be.

Yes! Another easy recipe for you to sink your teeth into!

Philly Cheesesteak Pizza, Homemade Crust

Let’s go over a few basics of the Philly cheese steak pizza.

Can You Use Expired Yeast?

The short answer—No, I would not recommend expired yeast.

The key to a fantastic homemade pizza is the yeast. If you have some tucked in the back of your cupboard, it’s likely expired. Expired yeast is often the reason your pizza dough won’t rise properly.

So go ahead and grab yourself a pack of Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast when you go to the grocery store.

What Kind of Meat is Used for Philly Cheese Steak?

Choosing the meat is almost totally up to you. By all means, there are different cuts of meat you can use in this recipe.

For instance, you can use ribeye or skirt steak shaved into thin slices.

Perhaps the easiest and most cost-effective meat to use is thickly sliced roast beef, which is a great option as well. This is actually the meat we use in our sandwiches and will be what we use for our pizza, too.

What Kind of Sauce Goes on Philly Cheese Steak Pizza?

Choosing your sauce is also a personal preference. So, you can use regular pizza sauce, alfredo sauce, or you can not use sauce at all.

However, I like to make it without any sauce, the provolone cheese provides enough moisture, and in combination with this delicious crust recipe, you’ll see how delicious a sauceless pizza can be.

What Cheese to Use for Philly Cheese Steak?

The best cheese for Philly cheesesteaks is provolone.

So, I always use mild provolone cheese. But you can certainly use a sharp cheese. I think the mild cheese has just the right amount of flavor and texture to make the perfect pie.

How to Make Philly Cheese Steak Pizza

Equipment

If you’re using a ribeye or skirt steak cut, slice it thinly and saute it on the stovetop before beginning. Because this will ensure your steak is cooked nicely before starting.

If you’re using roast beef, no need to cook it. Just chop it up and it’s ready to go!

Follow the crust recipe below, it’s super quick and easy to make.

While your crust is rising, you can cut your peppers, onion, and mushrooms. I recommend using a julienne slicer. If you don’t have one, that’s okay too. Then you can simply cut the peppers and onions into long thin slices. Chop up the mushrooms any way you like.

Crust Ingredients

  • 1¾ to 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 envelope Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 1½ teaspoons sugar
  • ⅔ cup very warm water (120° to 130°F)
  • 3 tablespoons Mazola corn oil

Pro Tip: Follow the instructions on the Fleischmann’s® RapidRise® Yeast package and always use a thermometer to get the water between 120° to 130°F.

Because it’s the most important factor in the success of baking with yeast, make sure the water is not hot, but not too cold. If you don’t have a thermometer, just remember the water should be very warm to the touch, not hot and not too cold.

How to Make Pizza Crust

Combine 1 cup flour, undissolved yeast, sugar and salt in a large bowl.

Then, once your dry ingredients are mixed, add very warm water and oil. Next, mix until well blended, about 1 minute.

Then, gradually add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. The dough should form a ball and will be slightly sticky.

Finally, knead on a floured surface, adding additional flour if necessary, until smooth and elastic. It will be about 4 minutes. Let the dough rest at this point for 10 minutes.

Now is a good time to cut your veggies.

Once the dough has risen, pat dough with floured hands to fill greased pizza pan or baking sheet. Or roll dough on a floured counter to 12-inch circle. Then, place it in a greased pizza pan or baking sheet. Next, form a rim by pinching the edge of the dough.

Add Your Philly Cheese Steak Pizza Toppings

Now that the dough is ready, add your toppings evenly across the pizza.

First, begin with the optional pizza sauce.

Because I’m not using pizza sauce, I’ll just cover the pizza with provolone cheese. Then add the peppers, onion, mushrooms, and steak. Finally, toss a few extra pieces of cheese on top to melt over some of the veggies and meat.
